STELLAR is one of 15 finalists from nearly 300 letters of intent received by the NSF.<\/p>\n<p>STELLAR is led by the University of Rochester and also includes team members from\u00a0<a class=\"ext\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.monroecc.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-extlink=\"\">Monroe Community College<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"ext\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\" href=\"https:\/\/nextcorps.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-extlink=\"\">Nextcorps<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"ext\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\" href=\"https:\/\/luminate.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-extlink=\"\">Luminate<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"ext\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\" href=\"https:\/\/rochesterbiz.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-extlink=\"\">Greater Rochester Enterprise<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"ext\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\" href=\"https:\/\/americom.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-extlink=\"\">AmeriCOM<\/a>, and\u00a0<a class=\"ext\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ny.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-extlink=\"\">New York State<\/a>. RIT\u2019s contingent is led by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rit.edu\/directory\/sfpeen-stefan-preble\">Stefan Preble<\/a>, the Bausch and Lomb Professor in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rit.edu\/engineering\/electrical-and-microe-engineering\">Microsystems Engineering<\/a>. Co-principal investigators are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rit.edu\/directory\/lmbnca-linda-bryant\">Linda Bryant<\/a>, director of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rit.edu\/ntid\/learningcenter\/\">National Technical Institute for the Deaf\u2019s Learning Consortium and Online Learning Initiatives<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rit.edu\/directory\/smhsps-seth-hubbard\">Seth Hubbard<\/a>, head of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rit.edu\/science\/school-physics-and-astronomy\">School of Physics and Astronomy<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rit.edu\/directory\/jxqpci-jie-qiao\">Jie Qiao<\/a>, associate professor in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rit.edu\/science\/chester-f-carlson-center-imaging-science\">Chester F. Carlson Center for Imaging Science<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are excited to be part of the STELLAR team to drive the next wave of innovation in lasers and their applications by building on Rochester\u2019s and RIT\u2019s leadership in optics, photonics, imaging, semiconductor, and microelectronic research and education,\u201d said Preble. \u201cTogether with our partners, we will advance laser technologies and develop a highly skilled workforce to ensure our region remains a global leader in optics, photonics, and laser-enabled solutions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>After the NSF conducts in-depth, in-person interviews with the finalist teams to further assess risks, resources, and adaptability, awardees will be announced in early 2026. If funded, STELLAR will develop a manufacturing ecosystem for lasers, provide critical research and development support for growing companies, and help teachers from middle school through all levels of college develop curricula to help students learn skilled trades in laser systems.<\/p>\n<p>The Rochester region is already well known for its storied and robust history in optics, photonics, imaging, and laser companies and suppliers.
